Getting a Refund? Do You Need a Tax Extension?
Quick answer
Not always. The IRS says there's no penalty for filing after April 15, 2027 if it owes you a refund. An extension still helps if you're not sure: if your return ends up showing tax due, Form 4868 keeps you clear of the late-filing penalty until October 15, 2027. Either way, file within 3 years of the due date or you can lose the refund.

When an extension still makes sense
- You're not sure it's a refund. A late 1099, a stock sale or side income can turn a refund into a balance due. If you owe and file late without an extension, the late-filing penalty applies.
- Your state asks for one. State rules differ, and some states want their own extension or a copy of the federal one. State tax extensions.
- You want a firm date. With Form 4868, your return is due October 15, 2027, and you can file any time before then.
Filling in Form 4868 when you expect a refund
- Line 4: your estimate of total tax for the year. It still has to be reasonable.
- Line 5: what you've paid: withholding from your W-2s and 1099s, plus any estimated payments.
- Line 6: line 4 minus line 5. If line 5 is more than line 4, enter -0-.
- Line 7: leave it at 0 if you're not sending a payment.

Your refund comes with your return
Form 4868 doesn't claim your refund; your return does. Filing an extension and then filing in October means your refund comes after an October return is processed. If you want the money sooner, file the return sooner.
The 3-year limit
To get a refund of withholding or estimated tax, you have to file your return within 3 years of its due date. The same limit applies to refundable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit. After that, you can lose it.
If it turns out you owe
Tax not paid by April 15, 2027 gets interest and a late-payment penalty, extension or not. If you also file late with no extension, the late-filing penalty is added. Tax extension penalties, explained.
