How to File a Tax Extension

Quick answer

To get 6 more months to file your federal return, do one of three things by April 15, 2027: pay what you owe online and mark it as an extension, e-file Form 4868, or mail a paper Form 4868. All three are free to request. Your return is then due October 15, 2027.

None of them gives you more time to pay. Tax you owe is still due April 15, 2027.

File Form 4868 for your 2026 return, and pay what you owe

The three ways to file a tax extension

The IRS lists three ways to request an automatic extension of time to file a U.S. individual income tax return, right at the top of Form 4868. Pick the one that fits how you'll pay.

You don't need a reason, and the IRS doesn't approve extensions one by one. It contacts you only if your request is denied.

Way 1: Pay what you owe and mark it as an extension

If you owe tax, this is the quickest route: pay online and choose extension as the reason, and the IRS treats it as your extension. You don't file Form 4868 at all.

  • IRS Direct Pay. Free, from your bank account, with no sign-in. Choose "Extension" as the reason for payment, and the payment applies to Form 4868 for the year you're extending. You get a confirmation number for each payment. Keep it.
  • Your IRS online account. Pay from the account you use to see your balance and past payments.
  • EFTPS. The Treasury's payment system. It needs enrollment ahead of time, so it's rarely the right pick in the last week.
  • Debit card, credit card or digital wallet. Through the IRS's approved processors. They charge a fee; the IRS doesn't get it.

Pay as much of your estimated balance as you can. The extension still counts if you pay only part, but interest and the late-payment penalty run on whatever is unpaid after April 15, 2027. How to get an extension by paying.

Way 2: E-file Form 4868

E-filing sends Form 4868 to the IRS electronically, and you get an electronic acknowledgment once it's done. It works whether or not you owe.

Have last year's return nearby. When you e-file, you're asked for information from it to verify who you are. If you e-file Form 4868, don't also mail one, unless you're mailing a check or money order with it.

If you choose to e-file, you'll go to our partner TaxExtension.com. We may receive compensation from that partner.

Way 3: Mail a paper Form 4868

Fill out Form 4868, print it and mail it to the IRS address for where you live. It counts as on time if it's properly addressed, has enough postage and is postmarked by April 15, 2027.

Our free tool asks plain-English questions, fills in the IRS PDF in your browser, and shows you the right address, with or without a payment. Your Social Security number never leaves the page. Fiscal-year filers must use paper, so this is the route for them.

What you need before you start

  • Your name, and your spouse's if you'll file jointly, as they'll appear on the return.
  • Social Security numbers or ITINs for both of you.
  • Your current address.
  • Last year's return, plus this year's W-2s, 1099s and any estimated tax payments.
  • An estimate of this year's total tax, and how much you've already paid.

How to estimate what you owe

Form 4868 asks for your best estimate of your total tax (line 4) and what you've already paid through withholding and estimated payments (line 5). The difference is your balance due (line 6).

The estimate has to be reasonable. If the IRS later finds it wasn't, the extension is void. Start from last year's return, adjust for what changed (a new job, a bigger 1099, a new child), and use the numbers on this year's W-2s and 1099s. If you expect to owe nothing, enter 0. How to estimate your tax for an extension.

What an extension doesn't do

  • It doesn't extend the time to pay. Interest runs on tax not paid by April 15, 2027, and a late-payment penalty usually does too. How paying works.
  • It covers your federal return only. Your state may need its own extension. Check your state's tax agency.

After you file the extension

Keep your proof: the payment confirmation number, the e-file acknowledgment, or your mailing receipt. Then file your return by October 15, 2027. You can file any time before then.

When you file, don't attach Form 4868. Report any payment you sent with it on Schedule 3, line 10 (Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR).

If you're abroad, a nonresident or married

  • Out of the country on April 15, 2027? U.S. citizens and residents who live and work abroad get an automatic 2 months, to June 15, 2027, and Form 4868 adds 4 more. Extensions for Americans abroad.
  • Nonresident alien with no U.S. wages? Your Form 1040-NR is due June 15, 2027, and the extension runs to December 15, 2027. Form 4868 for Form 1040-NR.
  • Married filing jointly? One Form 4868 covers you both. Joint extensions.
  • Filing for a business? Partnerships, corporations, trusts and estates use Form 7004. Sole proprietors use Form 4868. Form 4868 vs Form 7004.

An example, start to finish

This is an example with round numbers, not a real case. A married couple expects their 2026 tax to be about $9,000. Their W-2s show $7,200 withheld, so they expect to owe about $1,800. It's April 10 and their 1099s are late.

  • Pay-to-extend: they pay $1,800 through IRS Direct Pay on April 10, choose "Extension," and keep the confirmation number. Done. Their return is due October 15, 2027.
  • Or mail Form 4868: one form with both names and both SSNs, line 4 $9,000, line 5 $7,200, line 6 $1,800. If they enclose a check for $1,800, it goes to the payment address for their state; if they pay online instead, the form goes to the no-payment address.
  • Or e-file: the same numbers through IRS Free File or another e-file option, then pay online.

Whichever way they choose, they file the return itself by October 15, 2027 and report the $1,800 payment on Schedule 3, line 10.

Questions people ask

Do I need a reason to get a tax extension?

No. The extension is automatic. You don't explain why you need more time, and the IRS contacts you only if your request is denied.

Can I file a tax extension if I can't pay?

Yes. You can still get the extension if you can't pay the balance. Pay as much as you can by April 15, 2027, because interest and the late-payment penalty run on the unpaid part. File the extension either way.

How long does a tax extension give me?

Six months for most people: from April 15, 2027 to October 15, 2027. People out of the country already have until June 15, 2027 and Form 4868 adds 4 more months, so they also end at October 15, 2027.

Is it too late to file a tax extension?

After the original due date, yes: Form 4868 has to be filed by April 15, 2027 (or June 15, 2027 if you qualify for the June date). If you missed it, file your return as soon as you can to keep the late-filing penalty down. Last-minute options.

Does a federal extension extend my state return?

Not automatically. Form 4868 covers your federal return. Some states accept the federal extension and some need their own form, so check your state's tax agency.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting to pay until the return. The extension moves the filing date, not the payment date.
  • Filing both ways. If you pay and mark it as an extension, or e-file, you don't need to mail a paper form too.
  • Guessing at line 4. A number that isn't a reasonable estimate can void the extension.
  • Mailing to the wrong address. The address depends on your state and whether a payment is enclosed. Look it up.
  • Using a private courier for a P.O. box. The payment addresses are P.O. boxes, which only the U.S. Postal Service delivers to.
