Fillable vs filled for you
The blank PDF leaves the thinking to you: which lines apply, the subtraction, the mailing address. Our free tool asks plain-English questions, does the math, checks lines 8 and 9 when they apply, fills in the PDF in your browser, and shows the right address for your state. Your Social Security number is never saved or sent.
Which year's PDF to use
Form 4868 is dated by tax year. The 2025 form is the current one on IRS.gov, and it's for extending 2025 returns. For 2026 returns, due April 15, 2027, use the 2026 Form 4868. The IRS usually posts it in December or January, and we switch our copy and our tool the same week.
Printing tips
- Print page 1 at actual size (100%), not "fit to page."
- Cut or fold along "DETACH HERE" and mail the bottom part. Keep the instructions and a copy for yourself.
- Black ink, if you fill it in by hand. No signature is needed.
- If you're paying by check, put it in the same envelope and use the payment address.
Older years
Prior-year Forms 4868 are on IRS.gov's prior-year forms page. You'd only need one for a fiscal year that began in that year, since a Form 4868 can't be filed after the original due date.
