IRS Form 4868: What It Is and How to Use It
Quick answer
Form 4868 is the IRS application for an automatic extension of time to file your individual income tax return. It gives you 6 more months: for 2026 returns, from April 15, 2027 to October 15, 2027. You don't need a reason or a signature, and it doesn't give you more time to pay.

What Form 4868 does
It moves the deadline to file your federal return by 6 months, automatically. You file it, and unless the IRS writes to deny it, you have the extension. The IRS contacts you only if your request is denied.
To qualify, you need to do three things: properly estimate your tax for the year, enter that total on line 4, and file Form 4868 by your return's due date. An estimate that isn't reasonable can void the extension.
Form 4868 also extends the time to file a Form 709 or 709-NA gift tax return for the same calendar year. It doesn't extend the time to pay that tax.

- People who pay online and mark it as an extension don't need to file it at all.

What Form 4868 doesn't do
It doesn't extend the time to pay. You owe interest on any tax not paid by April 15, 2027, and the late-payment penalty is usually 1/2 of 1% of the unpaid tax for each month, up to 25%. You can still get the extension if you can't pay, but pay what you can. Does an extension give you more time to pay?
It also doesn't cover your state return, and the 2025 Form 4868 doesn't extend a 2026 return. Use the form for the year you're extending. Which Form 4868 PDF to use.
After you file Form 4868
- Keep your proof. A mailing receipt, an e-file acknowledgment or a payment confirmation number.
- File your return by October 15, 2027. You can file any time before then. Don't attach Form 4868 to the return.
- Claim what you paid. Report any payment you made with Form 4868 on Schedule 3, line 10 of Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR (Form 1040-SS: Part I, line 9).
- Married and changed plans? If you file one joint Form 4868 and then separate returns, you can put the whole payment on either return or split it any way you agree. If you each filed a Form 4868 and then file jointly, enter the total paid on the joint return.
Questions people ask
Does Form 4868 need a reason?
No. You don't have to explain why you're asking for the extension.
Will the IRS confirm my Form 4868?
Not for a paper form. The IRS contacts you only if your request is denied. An e-filed Form 4868 gets an electronic acknowledgment.
Can a sole proprietor use Form 4868?
Yes. If your business is reported on your Form 1040 (Schedule C), your personal extension covers it. Businesses that file their own return use Form 7004.
What happens if my estimate is wrong?
A reasonable estimate is all the IRS asks for. If the IRS later finds the estimate wasn't reasonable, the extension is void. If you underestimated, interest and the late-payment penalty apply to what you didn't pay by April 15, 2027.
Does Form 4868 extend my gift tax return too?
Yes. An extension for your calendar-year income tax return also extends the time to file Form 709 or 709-NA for the same year. It doesn't extend the time to pay gift or GST tax.
