2027 tax extension deadlines

These are the dates for 2026 returns on the calendar year, which is almost everyone.

Most people (Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-SS)April 15, 2027October 15, 2027

Form 1040-NR filers with no U.S. wagesJune 15, 2027December 15, 2027

All of these are the last day. A mailed Form 4868 counts if it's postmarked that day; an e-filed one if it's sent that day in your own time zone. The countdown above runs to the end of the day where you are.

If you're out of the country

U.S. citizens and residents who are out of the country on April 15, 2027 get an automatic 2-month extension, to June 15, 2027, to file and pay without filing anything. You count as out of the country if you live outside the United States and Puerto Rico and your main place of work is outside them too, or you're in military or naval service on duty outside them.

Need more time than that? File Form 4868 by June 15, 2027 with line 8 checked, and you get 4 more months, to October 15, 2027. Interest still runs on unpaid tax from April 15, 2027. Form 4868 for Americans abroad.

If you file Form 1040-NR

If you received wages as an employee subject to U.S. income tax withholding, your dates are the standard ones: April 15, 2027, extended to October 15, 2027. If you didn't, your Form 1040-NR is due June 15, 2027. File Form 4868 by then with line 9 checked, and the return is due December 15, 2027. Form 4868 for nonresident aliens.

Pick your situation and the last day of your tax year. For a calendar year, that's December 31.

Fiscal-year filers

If your tax year isn't the calendar year, Form 4868 is due by the due date of your fiscal-year return: the 15th day of the 4th month after your year ends. The extension adds 6 months. Fiscal-year filers must file Form 4868 on paper. Use the calculator above with your year-end date.

Weekends and holidays

When a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, it moves to the next business day. The holidays that count are District of Columbia legal holidays, which include Emancipation Day on April 16. In 2022, Emancipation Day was observed on Friday, April 15, so the deadline moved to Monday, April 18. In 2023, April 15 was a Saturday and Emancipation Day was observed on Monday, April 17, so the deadline was Tuesday, April 18. The same pattern returns in 2028: the deadline for 2027 returns is April 18, 2028.

None of the 2027 dates move: April 15, 2027 is a Thursday, June 15 a Tuesday, October 15 a Friday and December 15 a Wednesday.

Disaster postponements

If you live or work in a federally declared disaster area, the IRS may postpone your filing and payment dates, sometimes by months. Each relief notice names the places and the new dates. We don't track individual disasters, because they change; check IRS tax relief in disaster situations.

Past deadlines: 2025 returns

For 2025 returns, the dates printed on the 2025 Form 4868 were:

  • Form 4868 due: April 15, 2026 (June 15, 2026 if out of the country or a 1040-NR filer without U.S. wages)
  • Extended return due: October 15, 2026 (December 15, 2026 for 1040-NR filers without U.S. wages)

All of those have passed. Form 4868 can't be filed after the original due date. If you missed it, file your return and pay as soon as you can to limit penalties and interest.

If you miss the deadline

  • Missed the April deadline without an extension? It's too late for Form 4868. File the return as soon as you can. The late-filing penalty is usually 5% of the tax due for each month or part of a month the return is late, up to 25%.
  • Got the extension but missed the extended date? The late-filing penalty applies to a return filed after its due date, including extensions. File as soon as you can.
  • Owe and can't pay? File anyway. The late-filing penalty is usually much bigger than the late-payment penalty. How the penalties work.
