What IRS Free File is
IRS Free File is a program run with the IRS that lets you prepare and file a federal return, or an extension, online at no cost. It has two parts:
- Guided tax software from IRS Free File partners, which asks questions and fills in the forms. Each partner sets its own eligibility rules (income, age, state of residence) for full returns.
- Free File Fillable Forms, online versions of the IRS paper forms that you fill in yourself. It's open to any income level and doesn't do state returns.
Either one can e-file Form 4868, according to the IRS Free File page.
No income limit for extensions
The income limit you may have heard about applies to free guided returns, not to extensions. The IRS's own extension page says to use Free File, with "no income limit for extensions." Fillable Forms is open to any income level too.
How to file Form 4868 with IRS Free File
- Go to IRS.gov first. Open the IRS Free File page on IRS.gov and follow its links. The IRS says to always go through IRS.gov to reach Free File software, so you get the free product and not a paid one with a similar name.
- Choose guided software or Fillable Forms. For an extension alone, either works.
- Find the extension option in the product. Ask for an extension of time to file, Form 4868. You don't need to start a whole return.
- Enter your details: names, address and Social Security numbers, the same as on your return.
- Enter your estimate: total tax for the year, what you've paid, and what you'll pay now, if anything.
- Verify your identity. E-filing asks for information from last year's return, so have it with you.
- Submit it, and keep the acknowledgment. You get an electronic acknowledgment once the transaction is complete. Keep it with your records.
Paying when you file through Free File
If you owe, pay what you can by April 15, 2027. The IRS recommends paying electronically. You can pay through IRS Direct Pay, your IRS online account, EFTPS, or a debit or credit card. If you pay online and mark the payment as an extension, that payment is your extension by itself, and you don't also need to file Form 4868 through Free File. Get an extension by paying.
When Free File is open
Free File follows the filing season. As of October 2026, IRS.gov says Free File has closed and to check back in January 2027. Until it reopens, you can still mail a paper Form 4868, or pay online and mark the payment as an extension.
If Free File isn't right for you
- Mail Form 4868. Fill it out free here, print it, and mail it. No account. Fiscal-year filers must file on paper anyway.
- Pay online as your extension. If you owe, one payment does it.
- Use a paid e-file service if you want a guided flow and support. Our partner TaxExtension.com e-files Form 4868. E-file with TaxExtension.com (opens in a new tab)
If you choose to e-file, you'll go to our partner TaxExtension.com. We may receive compensation from that partner.
After you file
File your return by October 15, 2027. When you do, report any payment you made with the extension on Schedule 3, line 10 (Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR). Your state may need its own extension; Free File Fillable Forms doesn't file state returns.

Common mistakes
- Clicking an ad instead of going through IRS.gov. Paid products can look a lot like Free File.
- Starting a full return when you only need the extension. Look for the extension or Form 4868 option.
- Waiting until the last night. Identity checks with last year's return can take time. Start early, and have a paper backup ready.
- Not saving the acknowledgment. It's your proof the IRS got the extension.
