Where to mail your Form 4868

The address depends on where you live and whether you're sending a payment.

Before you mail it

  • Mail it by the due date. A paper form is on time if it's properly addressed, has enough postage, and is postmarked by the due date.
  • Use the U.S. Postal Service for P.O. boxes. The payment addresses are P.O. boxes, and private delivery services can't deliver to them.
  • Get proof of mailing. USPS Certified Mail gives you a dated receipt. Keep it with a copy of the form.
  • Using FedEx, UPS or DHL? Only certain services count, and they use different street addresses. See the IRS list of private delivery services.
  • No signature needed. Form 4868 has no signature line.
  • Don't wait for a reply. The IRS contacts you only if your request is denied.
  • Keep a copy. Don't attach Form 4868 to your return. When you file, report any payment you sent with it on Schedule 3, line 10 (Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR).

You are responsible for the accuracy and timely filing of your form. We do not file anything for you on the free path. Verify the mailing address against current IRS instructions.
