Form 4868 Rejected: What to Do
Quick answer
If your e-filed Form 4868 is rejected, fix what the rejection message says and resend it. If you can't, mail a paper Form 4868: the IRS manual counts it as on time if it's filed by the later of the due date or 10 calendar days after you were notified of the rejection.

An e-filed Form 4868 was rejected
A rejected e-file isn't filed. The provider shows the reason; read it carefully.
- Information that doesn't match IRS records, such as a name, Social Security number or identity check from last year's return, is a common cause of e-file rejections. Use your name exactly as the Social Security Administration has it, and check every digit.
- Fix it and resend electronically if you can.
- Or file on paper. Under IRM 3.11.212.5, a paper extension after a rejected e-file is timely if filed by the later of the regular due date or 10 calendar days after the notification. Keep a copy of the rejection notice.
If you owe, paying online and marking it as an extension also gets you the extension, with no form to reject.
Problems with a paper Form 4868
- Filed late: the IRS denies an extension not filed by the due date and tells you by letter. The fix is to file your return as soon as you can.
- No Social Security number: the IRS writes for it and returns the form, unless it says "ITIN TO BE REQUESTED" or has Form W-7 attached.
- No address: the IRS can't process it. Always include one.
If it's close to the deadline
Don't wait on a second e-file attempt. Mail a paper Form 4868 postmarked by April 15, 2027, or pay online as your extension. One accepted extension is all you need.
Questions people ask
If I resend and it's accepted after the deadline, am I late?
A rejected e-file followed by a quick correction or paper filing is one of the exceptions the IRS manual allows. Keep the rejection notice in case it's questioned.
Does a rejection count against me?
A rejection just means the extension wasn't filed yet. Once one is accepted or timely mailed, you're extended.
Should I mail a paper copy too, just in case?
Only if the e-file was rejected. If it was accepted, don't mail a paper Form 4868 as well.
